Expecting the Unexpected: Severe Weather Preparation Tips for Pregnant Women

Pregnancy is a time of excitement and anticipation, but it can also bring added concerns, especially when it comes to preparing for natural disasters. As a pregnant woman, taking extra precautions and planning to ensure your safety and well-being during severe weather is important.

Here are some essential tips for hurricane preparation when you are pregnant:

1. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings. Pay attention to official announcements and evacuation orders from local authorities.

2. Create a Pregnancy Emergency Kit: Put together a specific emergency kit tailored to your needs as a pregnant woman. Include essential items such as prenatal vitamins, any necessary medications, comfortable clothing, snacks, water, important documents, and a list of emergency contacts.

3. Communicate with Your Healthcare Provider: Keep in touch with your obstetrician or midwife if you experience any symptoms that concern you or think you may be in labor. In the case that you are unable to contact your provider, you should proceed to Piedmont OBED for evaluation. Phone service and power outages may cause communication issues. Discuss your emergency plan with them and make sure you have an updated copy of your medical records in your emergency kit.

4. Prioritize Rest and Hydration: Pregnancy already puts extra demands on your body, and stress from a natural disaster can further impact your well-being. During severe weather, make sure to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated, especially if you're in a hot and humid environment. Dehydration may cause you to experience contractions. Plan ahead with a supply of bottled water.

6. Secure Your Home: Take the time to secure your home and minimize potential hazards. Trim any overhanging trees, secure outdoor furniture in advance of severe weather. Consider your safety when leaving your home for any reason during severe weather.

7. Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and have alternative communication methods such as a battery-powered radio. Make sure to keep in touch with loved ones to let them know you're safe.

8. Plan for Power Outages: Have a plan in place for alternative power sources to keep communication methods charged and available in case of emergencies. Consider planning a few meals that can prepared with no power in case of extended outages.

9. Pack for Baby: If you're close to your due date, consider packing a small bag for the baby with essentials such as diapers, baby clothes, and blankets. Remember, your safety and the well-being of your baby should be your top priority during severe weather.

By taking proactive steps and being prepared, you can navigate through this challenging time with confidence and peace of mind.
