Is Getting the RSV Vaccine in Your Third Trimester of Pregnancy Important for Your Baby's Health?

Pregnancy is a time of joy and anticipation, but it's also a time when expectant mothers need to take extra precautions to safeguard their health and the health of their unborn babies. One important precaution to consider is vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a common respiratory virus that can be particularly dangerous for infants. RSV is the leading cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under one year of age. Babies who are born prematurely or who have certain underlying health conditions are at an even higher risk of developing severe RSV-related complications. The CDC recommends people who are 32 through 36 weeks pregnant during September through January should get one dose of maternal RSV vaccine to protect their babies.

Fortunately, there is a vaccine available to help protect against RSV, and pregnant women need to consider getting vaccinated. When a pregnant woman receives the RSV vaccine, her body produces antibodies that can be passed on to her unborn baby, providing some level of protection during those critical early months of life.
